What is a Misophonia Meltdown?

What does a Misophonia meltdown feel like? You just can't take it anymore. Your fists are clenched. Your heart is racing. Your ears are burning. The rage is bubbling up in every cell of your body.

For me, I would hide in a bathroom stall (if I could) while tears stained my cheeks. I would plug my ears so hard they might bleed. I would curse whomever was making the wretched noises. All while screaming in my head: shut up! shut UP! SHUT UP!  Maybe even stomping my feet like an enraged toddler. Making counter noises in my ears.

Part of me wondering how the rest of the world can be so disgusting...while another part of me wondered why I had to be like this. Why can't I just be normal, like everyone else? How is no one else bothered by this?! Why me?!

How Misophonia Takes Over

Obviously, this isn't healthy, but I had no idea how to regulate my nervous system. I was not in control of the impulses firing and the emotions flowing. I was along for the ride.

If this sounds familiar—you are not alone.

Misophonia is intense. It feels like you're being infiltrated by reactions that aren't your own, while at the same time internalizing the struggle as if there is something wrong with you.

But you need to know this: there is nothing wrong with you. I repeat: THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. Even neurotypical people struggle with things that others may not even notice. We all have patterns that run on autopilot.

That doesn't mean you're stuck with the patterns you don't like, though.

You Can Escape The Chaos

I am not going to lie to you; rewiring the mind takes effort. It takes conscious, every day effort to build new neural pathways and create safety in your own body. And. It's possible.

It takes commitment, but it's so worth it.

You've probably heard this story before, but I still remember the very first time I heard a whistle and DIDN'T feel an immediate sense of panic. It was the strangest, most curious feeling. Can this really be true? Can I really be okay right now? Can I actually hear this sound and not need to run away?

It made all the effort worth something. It was just a glimmer of the life that was to come.

More than 2 years later and Misophonia no longer runs my life. Well, that's not technically true, because now I have a career where all I do is talk about Misophonia! Ha! But now, instead of causing me pain, it gives me purpose. I get to support others in creating this same glimmer of change in their own lives.

Some of my clients see results really quickly; others it takes months of continued effort. In fact, I had someone reach out to me saying that they didn't think the Rewire Misophonia At The Source Program was working for them.

We emailed back and forth and I even offered to hop on a call with them.

A few months later, they emailed me again and shared that FINALLY...they were seeing the shifts. Their patience and perseverance are PAYING OFF and they are finally moving toward a more regulated, miso-free life.

It doesn't matter if you've suffered for 5 years or 50 years. You can shift the way your mind responds to Misophonia triggers. You can create better relationships with those you love the most. You can process your emotions in a healthy, productive way.

It takes practice, commitment and you can do it.

Let the next Misophonia Meltdown inspire you. Let it be a guide that pushes you to shifting your life for good. Because even just being a teeny, tiny less annoyed can have a HUGE, positive impact in your life.
